The new Netflix series “Making a Murder” has sparked some interest in the United States of the topic of necessary humiliation of the justice system. The article, “‘Making a Murderer’ shows that our justice system needs a healthy dose of humility” tells the sad story of Steven Avery serving 18 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. In 2005, he was accused of raping and beating 25-year-old Teresa Halbach. Police targeted Avery because they knew he had previously gotten into trouble by running a woman off the road and pointing a empty gun at her because of the rumors she was spreading about him doing inappropriate things on his front lawn. Gregory Allen was actually the man who beat and raped Halbach. After Avery served many years in prison, Allen went to police and admitted he did a crime that someone was already in prison for. Police disregarded this and didn’t even record it until they had doubts that Avery Committed it. Avery spent 9 more years in prison because police didn’t look more into it. I agree in saying our justice system needs more humiliation. We are supposed to depend on them to keep the dangerous people in jail, and not have rapist getting away with crimes and an innocent person serving in prison. Avery i’m sure is not the only innocent person that has had to serve and there are many people in prison right now taking the false blame. Police need to do a more thorough check and take all things into account before taking years away from someones life.
