The topic of my article is a police officer in California being shot in a parking lot. I found my article on CNN.com, and the name of the article is: “California officer shot dead in lot behind police station”. Ricardo Galvez had returned to the police department from a K-9 training, Wednesday and was sitting in a public parking lot. He had been in his car for a few minutes when two men approached. People suspect it to be a attempted robbery and the shooters didn’t know he was a police officer since he didn’t have his uniform on.  A nearby police car heard the shots, but the shooters fled and later got caught. This affects me because it makes me not feel safe, and this affects the world because police should be kept safe in order for them to keep us safe.

My article is called, “Bodies of 7 babies found in German apartment, police say”. Police say Friday, Wallenfels resident found a body of one baby and when police came, they found 6 more. Apparently, no arrests have been made, but the current owner of the apartment, a 45-year-old woman has not been questioned. Police will be doing a forensic exam on the bodies, but some are in bad condition. I think whoever killed and storages these babies bodies needs to have severe punishment. This affects me because people are in the world that do this, and it makes me not feel safe. This affects the world because they haven’t found the killer yet, so they’re still out there. It also made America news when it happened in Germany.

In the article on CNN, “Chicago Police: 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee lured into alley, shot to death”, a 9 year old boy is targeted in a gang shooting. According to Chicago Police Superintendent, Garry McCarthy, Tyshawn was targeted because of his fathers relationship with the gang. The gang beat Tyshawn on the back and face, and then was shot. My reaction to this is shocked. This affects me because it could of been any one of my friends or me. I think the family is not safe, because the gang killed their child and the dad already had relations with the gang. This affects the world because there are gangs every where, and no body is safe from them.

Band News Story

The White Oak High School Band, advancing from the Area C marching Competition, is state bound for the fourth time. The band is leaving Sunday on a charter bus to San Antonio to compete. They will compete November 2nd, at 4:00, at the Alamo dome.

Schools get the opportunity to go to state every two years, and the White Oak Roughnecks have qualified every time.

“I am very excited for this opportunity, because band is very important to me.” Freshman, Hailey Narvaez said “I think this will be a good experience for me since it’s my first year”.

About half of the student body at White Oak is in band, which is a proud accomplishment for their school.

“We have such a big band and the school supports us so much. My favorite part of band is having so many different people to talk to, you can really learn new things in it.” Freshman, Savannah Miller said.

According to the students, band is very important to White Oak.

“Not everyone can say they’re in the best military band in Texas, and I can.” Senior, Carlos Camacho said. “Band isn’t just about marching or playing your instrument. You feel like you’re a part of something and you make new friendships through band you never thought you could.” Freshman, Lauren Hinch said.

Current Event 10/23

According to CNN.com, and the article, “‘Great Tragedy’:’ At least 42, mostly elderly, killed in France bus crash.”, last Friday, an estimated 42 people died in a bus crash in France. The bus was carrying elders, and it is believed to be the worst road crash in France since 1982. The bus and a truck hit in the Southern part of France. The bus driver saw the crash coming, so he opened the door so people could attempt to get out. I think it was a good idea to try and let people escape. Although this doesn’t affect me greatly, I still feel sad for all the people that have died. This affects their families greatly. Their whole lives are changed because of the loss of a parent, grandparent, sister, etc. This affects the world, because if it wasn’t a big deal, it wouldn’t be in the U.S.A. news. This isn’t the most tragic news for the world, but it is for the families. Their world is ruined. This accident is important to the world because new road laws might be enforced, or roads might be made bigger.

An emergency meeting will be held on Friday, February 6th to vote on whether or not to rent computers due to a recent hacking in the school’s computer system.

For 22 years, the school has had a “Yearbook Day”, in which seniors pick up their yearbooks, and have a signing party in the gym.

“Even if the yearbook company cut us a break, we would risk not getting the book back before school ended.” Rodney Stephens, yearbook adviser said, “That would essentially kill an important tradition at the school.”

It seems the entire school agrees that Yearbook Day is an important tradition. Although, the yearbook staff isn’t worried about the deadline.

“We were confident this would not be a problem.” Alexis Zavia, editor of the yearbook said, “In fact, before this computer hacking problem, we were ahead of schedule.”

Yearbook Day means a lot to the seniors, they look forward to the party.

“Yearbook Day is one of the highlights of senior year.” Senior, Reggie White said. “Yearbook day is more popular than prom.”

Current Event 10/9

The article, “Netflix raises prices,” was published onto KLTV news on October 9th. The news article merely and quite unclearly states that Netflix is raising their monthly prices, due to the streaming of television series on two devices at once. This is not entirely bad for a number of people who enjoy Netflix. Reason being, they are only slightly raising prices by one dollar, therefore, they can add a more significant amount of TV series, and movies to their services. I feel excited, but also sad about this event. I enjoy spending my time watching Netflix and relaxing. The price doesn’t affect me that greatly. I do feel it isn’t a necessity to raise prices by only 1$. It also, in a way, doesn’t affect me, because I’m not the one paying for it. The price raise affects new customers in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America. Netflix raises a significant amount of money and their profits will shoot up just because of a single dollar. So many people have Netflix, that even if people refuse to pay, that will still make money. I think, however, people will be willing to pay the extra dollar because of Netflix’s popularity. The world will still enjoy Netflix, even with a price raise.

Current Event 10/2

According to the article, “Oregon shooting: Gunman dead after college rampage”, CNN updates us on the recent college shooting in Oregon. Thursday, Oregon’s Umpqua Community College suffered 10 deaths and 7 injuries. Gunman, 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer was heavily armed and had lots of ammunition. Mercer entered the classroom and immediately shot the professor. Every student jumped to the ground. Mercer then asked all the Christians to stand and when they did, he said, “Good, because you’re a Christian, you’re going to see God in just about one second.” The shooting affects me because it questions my safety at school. It also affects me because I am a Christian. He singled out all the Christians and shot them. Because of having a community college so close to White Oak, this also makes me nervous. This is not the first school shooting ever, and more will surely come, so this makes me not feel safe at school. This affects the world because it is yet again, another school shooting. People are still recovering from the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, and people are again, broken. People are questioning changing gun laws more and more. Students and teachers don’t feel safe in their school. Some teachers even carry guns. School security will definitely tried to be changed.

Current Event 9/25

http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/25/us/delaware-police-shoot-man-wheelchair/index.html
An armed, handicapped man was shot Wednesday because of the belief that he was reaching for his gun. According to CNN and the article, ‘Delaware police shoot man in wheelchair; his relatives ask why’, Jeremy McDole had a .38 caliber gun & was surrounded by local police. Loudly, they demanded that he put the gun down and put his hands up. Police say he did not listen and went to reach for his gun, resulting in Jeremy McDole laying on the pavement with his wheelchair by his side. This article affects me because my mom is considered handicapped. I think the police did what they thought was right. They could have talked to him a little bit more to get more information before shooting. But they believed they weren’t safe, so the acted upon it. His mother was also mad because she believed he had his hands in his lap. I can see where both sides are coming from. This affects the world because it brings up the ‘racial’ shootings & people who aren’t as privileged. People believe they shouldn’t shoot them because of who they are. This also affects the world because there are two sides to the story. The mother, who believes he was just putting his hands in his lap, and then the police, who beloved they were threatened. Either way, this brings lots of questions up that might never be answered.
